Laser Hair Removal

How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

At Levy Dermatology, we use the BBL™ Sciton laser, which stands for broadband light, for superior results. The BBL™ Sciton laser emits several waves of intense pulsed light to the treatment area, targeting the pigment in the active hair follicles. As the follicles absorb the light energy, they overheat and the follicle dies and falls out. BBL™ Sciton laser treatments interrupt the normal hair growth cycle, which helps lengthen the amount of time between treatments.

Hair exists in three stages, active, transition, and dormant, and laser hair removal targets those follicles in the active stage. As those follicles shed, dormant ones become active, so a series of treatments is the optimal way for Levy Dermatology to ensure your hair is treated. Over the course of your treatments, new hair follicles do not replace those that shed, and by the end, you’re left with smooth, hair-free skin.

Am I A Good Candidate?

The best laser hair removal candidates are those with thicker, darker-looking hair, as this type of hair follicle absorbs intense pulsed light the best. The BBL™ Sciton laser can be performed on any area of the body with unwanted hair.

What Is Laser Hair Removal Like?

Laser hair removal delivers excellent results in less time. During the procedure, your Levy Dermatology laser expert will use the BBL™ Sciton laser to target your desired treatment area. Smaller areas (like the upper lip) take less than 10 minutes to treat, while larger body parts may require 30-45 minutes.

Patients treated with the BBL™ Laser have often compared the feeling to a rubber band snapping against the skin or a heating sensation. Topical numbing agents can be applied to help maintain comfort throughout the procedure. The number of treatments needed will vary depending on the treatment area size and the type of hair being removed. For optimal results, 6 treatments performed every 6 weeks are recommended.

Is There Any Downtime?

There’s no downtime after laser hair removal. Patients can expect slight redness after the procedure, which resolves itself about a week later.

What Are Expected Results?

Final results can be visible after a series of treatments; however, patients will notice that there’s little need to shave between treatments. As you shed, the hairs are not replaced with new follicles, so as dormant follicles move into the active stage, they are targeted and begin to shed until finally, there are no more follicles to replace what’s gone. Most patients notice a significant reduction in hair density after only a few sessions, however, six treatment offers the best chance for optimal outcome. Because the treated area can get red afterwards, it is recommended you avoid sun exposure following each session; however, hair removal can be performed year round. Be ready for spring and summer with smooth, hair-free skin and more confidence than ever before.
