What is the Difference Between Botox® & Dermal Fillers?

Botox® and dermal fillers offer unique anti-aging results, which other products don’t. As their popularity has increased over the years, these minimally invasive cosmetic treatments are often considered the same. While both products utilize injections to combat the signs of aging, they tackle different specific issues.

How Do Injectables Work?

Botox® is a purified form of botulinum toxin A. This FDA-approved injection treats and prevents wrinkles by temporarily blocking signals from your nerves to your muscles, effectively preventing them from contracting. As a result, the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles is reduced, and signs of aging are removed.

Dermal fillers correct volume loss in your face to smooth out fine lines and restore the facial structure. Fillers add volume and fullness by injecting a substance that naturally occurs in our bodies (usually hyaluronic acid gel or calcium hydroxylapatite) in the trouble area.

What Areas Do These Injectables Treat?

The primary focus of Botox® is to minimize and prevent creases and wrinkles caused by repetitive facial expressions. The upper face, crow’s feet, forehead lines, and frown lines are the most commonly treated areas.

Fillers are designed to plump areas that have lost volume. A variety of fillers are available to fill in recessed scars, soften static wrinkles around the mouth and nose, and plump up thinning lips and cheeks.

The benefit of these products addressing different problem areas is that they can often be combined into one treatment. Talk to your Levy Dermatology Provider about how a combination approach might be right for you.

How Long Does the Injectable Last?

Your injectable results will vary based on what areas are treated, which treatment is used, and your personal medical health.  Dermal fillers will last longer than neurotoxins like Botox®.

Since Botox® is not a permanent treatment, repeated treatments are necessary to continue experiencing results. Without maintenance treatments, your body will restore full muscle function, which will result in lines and wrinkles returning. Most patients experience results lasting 3-5 months.

The results of fillers will mainly depend on which brand of injectable you choose. Most fillers contain hyaluronic acid gel, which adds instant volume and encourages collagen production in the treated area. Results from these can last 6 months, though some treatments have been known to last up to 2 years.
