What is Botox® Made Of?

Before 2002, you had limited options for treating facial lines and wrinkles, especially expression lines. When the FDA approved Botox®, it exploded in popularity as an anti-aging treatment. Botox® has a single active ingredient, a neurotoxin purified from a bacterium. This toxin acts on facial muscles to smooth lines and wrinkles.

What is Botox®?

Over seven million people had Botox® in 2016, and numbers have continued to grow. This injectable treatment targets expression lines and wrinkles that form from facial movements. It relaxes specific muscles to prevent repetitive wrinkle-forming motions without limiting your regular facial expressions. Botox® action is temporary and does not cause any injury to your facial nerves or muscles.

What is Botox® Made Of?

The botulinum toxin used to make Botox® has been produced by bacteria and is highly purified. Botox® uses one of seven similar compounds, onabotuliumA. Other types of muscle-relaxing neurotoxins use different forms, all of which work in a very similar way. While this compound can be toxic in high doses, injections use only tiny amounts. Botox® causes no permanent changes. Your face will return to normal, wrinkles and all, after it wears off.

What Can Botox® Treat?

All of our Levy Dermatology injectors are certified by Allergan, the manufacturer of Botox®. We use Botox® for many purposes, including:

  • Crow’s feet around the eyes
  • Glabellar lines (creases between the brows)
  • Forehead lines
  • Neck bands
  • Under-eye lines

Botox® also has many medical uses. Doctors use it to treat excessive sweating, eye muscle problems, muscle spasms, and migraines.

Botox® vs. Dermal Fillers

Botox® excels in treating certain types of lines and wrinkles. Dermal fillers, another type of injectable treatment, work on different types of lines. Dermal fillers add volume to areas like the lips and cheeks. You can have Botox® and dermal fillers if your dermatologist thinks you will benefit from both. Dermal fillers are often used for nasolabial folds, marionette lines, and fine lines around the mouth.

What Results Will I See With Botox®?

Botox® results take time to appear. You may see results within a few days, but full results usually take seven to ten days to appear. Botox® results can last three to six months. People who have Botox® regularly may see longer-lasting treatment results.

Am I a Good Candidate for Botox®?

If you have expression lines and wrinkles, you may be a good candidate for Botox®. Botulinum toxin is highly safe for most people. You may not be a good candidate if you have had a reaction to botulinum products, if you are pregnant, or if you have certain medical conditions.
