What is Kybella®?

Kybella® is an FDA-approved, minimally-invasive injectable used to treat the appearance of a double chin. It uses a synthetic version of a naturally occurring molecule, called deoxycholic acid, to break down and melt away fat – essentially ridding you of the fat cells entirely. Once the fat cells have been killed off, they can no longer store or accumulate fat.

Treatment should only be administered by a Kybella®-trained specialist because precision is crucial for choosing the injection sites. The average patient receives 20 or more small injections under their chin per treatment over the course of 15-20 minutes.

Kybella® may be right for you if:

  • You are self-conscious, embarrassed, or unhappy with your double chin.
  • You feel like your double chin makes you look older or heavier than you are.
  • You don’t want to have surgery.
  • You eat well and exercise, but it doesn’t seem to make a difference.

If you’re looking to rid yourself of your double chin with a non-invasive procedure, Kybella® is most likely right for you.

What Downtime Can I Expect?

For most patients, the recovery process for Kybella® is minimal. Immediately following the procedure, you may experience soreness in the injection area for up to two hours. Swelling, or puffiness, is also common around the injection site. Subsequent treatments experience a reduction in recovery time.

The most common side effects are minimal and short-lived but can include:

  • Swelling
  • Numbness
  • Redness
  • Areas of hardness
  • Slight bruising and burning at the injection site

A slight burning sensation lasting for up to a week is normal as the deoxycholic acid works to remove fat cells.

Managing Expectations: Recurring Treatments and Expected Results

The ideal Kybella® candidate realizes that the treatment requires more time commitment before results are visible, unlike with surgical approaches. On the flip side, once your treatment plan is completed (up to six months at most) those fat cells won’t be returning.

Patients have reported maintaining their slimmer neck for up to five years. Kybella® treatments are given at least 4-6 weeks apart, with six sessions being the maximum number for any one patient. Determining how many treatments will be needed depends on your chin profile, the amount and distribution of submental fat, and your personal treatment goals.
