Is Botox® Safe?

Botox® is an FDA-approved treatment that has both aesthetic and medical applications. When administered correctly by a trained Allergan-approved Provider, Botox® Cosmetics is both safe and effective. However, as with any medical or cosmetic procedure, there can be potential risks involved.

At Levy Dermatology, our Providers have performed thousands of successful Botox® treatments for our patients. We use highly specialized techniques for optimal outcomes each and every time.

What is Botox® Used for?

The primary use for Botox® in cosmetic applications is wrinkle reduction. Botox® is a neurotoxin that helps relax muscles by temporarily blocking nerve-muscle communication. This not only results in a more youthful appearance, but it also helps prevent new wrinkles from forming.

Botox® can address moderate-to-severe:

  • Frown lines between the brows
  • Crow’s feet
  • Horizontal forehead lines
  • Muscles bands in the neck
  • Lines under the eyes
  • Lateral eyebrows

Botox® can also be used throughout other areas of the face for anti-aging outcomes. However, these may be considered off-label uses for the product and should be discussed with your Levy Dermatology provider.

What are Potential Risks with Botox®?

Risks are typically minimal with Botox®. The most common side effects include minor pain, swelling, or bruising at or around the injection site. These symptoms generally subside within several hours to several days following your Botox® treatment.

Less common side effects are rare but can include:

  • Headaches
  • Droopy eyelids
  • Excessive tearing
  • Muscle weakness

First-time patients should be aware of potential allergic reactions to Botox® which can include shortness of breath, wheezing, itchiness, swelling of the face, and/or difficulty breathing. These symptoms are certainly not normal and if you experience any of them, you should consult your doctor immediately.

Choosing A Skilled Botox® Provider

Once Botox® is administered, results will last 3-6 months, whether they’re optimal or not. Unlike most dermal fillers which can be dissolved if desired results are not achieved, you’ll simply have to wait until the effects of Botox® subside. That’s why choosing a skilled Provider is so important.

Botox® should never be performed anywhere other than in a doctor’s office. You should also be wary of Botox® treatments that are done by persons who are not certified with Allergan. Otherwise, you may be putting yourself at risk for potential complications that are easily avoidable.

The Levy Dermatology Providers are highly trained and know the precise depths and locations to produce optimal outcomes for our patients. Dr. Levy serves as an Allergan physician trainer where he teaches and advises doctors nationwide on the proper methods of injecting Botox. Before the injection process begins, your Levy Dermatology provider will assess your individual concerns and work with you to create a treatment plan that will give you the best, natural-looking results possible.
