Detecting and removing skin cancer early is extremely important to a person’s recovery. While most patients are familiar with traditional skin cancer removal methods, many are not aware of Mohs Micrographic Surgery.

Mohs Micrographic Surgery involves removing cancer one layer at a time. This allows a surgeon to see where cancer ends and preserve the remaining tissue. By removing cancer one layer at a time, Mohs allows a patient to keep as much healthy skin as possible and has an extremely high cure rate.

Mohs Micrographic Surgery is more labor-intensive and takes much longer than traditional skin cancer removal and so is typically used only in certain situations. Most Mohs patients have a common type of skin cancer such as basal cell carcinoma or squamous cell carcinoma.

Candidates for Mohs surgery include:

  • Those with recurrent cancers have not been cured by traditional surgery.
  • Those with cancer in an area of the body with little tissue beneath it such as the eyelid, nose, ear, scalp, genitals, hand, or foot.
  • Those with large, aggressive types of skin cancer.

Those who are not good candidates for Mohs surgery include those unable to tolerate local anesthesia, have surgical phobias or anxieties (as Mohs takes a longer amount of time than other skin cancer removals) or are in poor health. Mohs surgery is a great option for patients who qualify. It has the highest cure rate, the lowest chance of regrowth, the minimal potential for scarring, and offers the most precise means of removal.
