What Should I Expect During a Skin Cancer Check?

The thought of skin cancer checks can often be scary, but they’re also a necessary part of life these days. Skin cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer. The good news is, if it’s caught early-on, it can also be the easiest to treat.

May is Melanoma Awareness Month which brings attention to the deadliest form of cancer. As dermatologists, we feel it’s extremely important to bring attention to this deadly disease throughout the year and recommend regular screenings for each of our patients. If you have fair skin or have spent a good deal of time in the sun, you’re encouraged to visit us more often.

So, what happens during a skin cancer check?

First, your doctor will talk to you about any concerns that you may have. Then, he’ll ask you to undress and put on a dressing gown. Your doctor will then proceed to examine every inch of your body from scalp to toe looking for anything that may be a sign of cancer such as discoloration, asymmetrical moles, or moles over 1/4 inch in diameter.

What if A Levy Dermatology Provider finds something?

In the chance that your doctor finds something irregular, he’ll perform a simple biopsy. A Levy Dermatology Provider will apply a numbing agent before removing as much of the mole as possible. He’ll then send the sample to a lab for closer examination by a pathologist.

If you’re diagnosed with skin cancer, you’ll be advised on the next steps to take. In most cases, a Levy Dermatology Provider will recommend Mohs surgery which removes the entire cancer while leaving as much surrounding possible tissue unharmed. Micrographic surgery has a 99% cure rate.
