FACIAL REJUVENATION/ FULL-FIELD RESURFACING
WHAT IS THE SCITON LASER SYSTEM?
The Sciton laser is a multi-purpose erbium:YAG device that helps you restore the youthful appearance of your skin and improve its texture, tone, and feel. There are three modalities to this laser: Contour, MicroLaser Peel, and ProFractional. These three treatments can be combined at the same time for maximal benefit. The Sciton laser can be used on the face, neck, chest, and hands.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE IN THESE THREE TREATMENTS?
The Contour resurfacing laser is an ablative laser for full-field resurfacing of the skin. This powerful tool can remove deep, etched-in lines of the face, and crepiness, particularly around the mouth and eyes. Considered by many to be the “home-run” laser for facial rejuvenation, full-field resurfacing with the Contour laser requires downtime for post-operative healing, but the results are astounding!
The MicroLaser Peel (MLP) is an ablative rejuvenation process but much more shallow than the Contour. It removes the top layers of the skin, removing many unwanted effects of years in the sun. Patients report a glowing, healthier appearance to the skin and a tighter texture. In addition, blemishes and unwanted growths of the skin such as moles, tags, keratoses, and warts can be effectively erased with the MLP single-spot handpiece.
The ProFractional component bores tiny channels deeper into the skin, stimulating new collagen synthesis. This new collagen is generated over time, so the effects are extended over time. You will see improvements for months to come.
Results can be obtained in just one treatment especially with the Contour laser. For the MLP and ProFractional, however, multiple treatments are often necessary. The number of treatments will vary from patient to patient and the condition being treated. Your physician can personalize a plan based on your specific needs and may choose to combine ProFactional Therapy with other aesthetic procedures to further personalize your treatment.

WHAT ARE THE RISKS OF THE THESE TREATMENTS?
Risks include pinpoint bleeding, swelling, bruising, redness, and minor skin infections. Eye shields are used to protect your eyes during the procedure.
WHAT IS THE RECOVERY PERIOD AFTER A TREATMENT?
Any ablative resurfacing laser treatment is a serious procedure. You will need to plan for 4-7 days of downtime as your new skin is healing and regenerating. Your dermatologist may offer you some pain medication to help during the procedure and can do special anesthetic injections to help with the discomfort. You will also be offered a cold air blower during treatment to increase your comfort during the procedure.
WHAT WILL HAPPEN DURING THE PROCEDURE?
Your skin will be cleaned in the treatment area and your eyes will be protected with safety shields. A laser handpiece will be positioned gently on the skin. When the laser energy is applied, you will hear a rapid succession of snapping sounds. The handpiece will be moved around to adjacent locations until the entire treatment area has been covered. The procedure normally takes 15 to 30 minutes but can take an hour for deeper resurfacing.
WILL IT BE UNCOMFORTABLE?
MLP and ProFractional therapies are widely regarded as comfortable procedures, usually tolerated with the use of a topical numbing cream or local anesthetic, depending on the depth of the treatment. Contour laser resurfacing requires regional nerve blocks and local anesthetics to make the procedure virtually pain-free.
WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE TREATMENT?
Immediately following the procedure, you may experience redness and a sensation resembling a sunburn. Your physician will advise you on specific after-treatment care recommendations, which may include analgesics and application of an ointment to keep the skin moist.
