Excessive Sweating

What is Excessive Sweating?

Excessive sweating is a frustrating condition that’s experienced by millions of people across the country. Excessive sweating is caused by overactive sweat glands, which aren’t properly responding to the body’s efforts to maintain its own temperature. That means people who have hyperhidrosis often find themselves sweating even when they’re cold or not active.

People with hyperhidrosis may have to constantly change their shirts to hide sweat stains, feel self-conscious about raising their arms, become nervous about wearing certain outfits and even interacting with others, especially if excessive sweating affects the hands.

Levy Dermatology takes excessive sweating seriously. We offer diagnosis and treatment for those patients who want to improve their hyperhidrosis with innovative dermatological solutions.

Treating Hyperhidrosis

To treat hyperhidrosis, your Levy Dermatology Provider will work with you to create a regimen that works well with your schedule and lifestyle. You may be prescribed topical or oral medication, or you may receive prescription deodorants or wipes to help control the sweat.

BOTOX® or other neuromodulator treatments may also be recommended, as botulinum toxin can help freeze the muscles in your arms that may cause the overproduction of sweat. In addition, microneedling with radiofrequency (although an off-label, non-FDA approved treatment) has found to be of benefit for some patients.

How Can I Prevent Hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis is usually a genetic condition, so not much can be done to prevent it from occurring. However, treating excessive sweat can allow you to maintain a normal life without worrying about sweating through your clothes every day. The cause should be determined first, so it is imperative to have a visit with one of our providers to better assess your excessive sweating and develop a customized treatment plan that meets your needs.
