What’s the Difference Between Botox and Dermal Fillers?

Let’s face it – it seems as though every anti-aging product on the shelves promises to eliminate your wrinkles and restore your face to its youthful luster. Skin creams and serums are promising to turn back the clock 5, 10, even 15 years with regular use. Sure, these products can lead to some results…but they don’t have the youth-enhancing, wrinkle-erasing powers of Botox or dermal fillers!

Problem is, a lot of people aren’t sure what separates the two treatments. With that in mind, let’s take a look at the key differences between Botox and dermal fillers – and which anti-aging injection is right for you:

  • Botox: This injection uses a safe form of botulinum toxin to block the nerve signals that your brain sends to your muscles. As a result, the muscle is paralyzed and unable to contract, allowing the overlying skin to appear smoother and more relaxed. Botox is commonly injected in the forehead and around the eyes. Injections take less than 30 minutes to administer, with results lasting for 3-6 months. Botox is an excellent option for patients who are primarily concerned with the appearance of deep-set wrinkles and creases along their lines of expression (frown lines across the forehead and crow’s feet around the eyes). However, it does not address issues associated with loss of facial volume.
  • Dermal Fillers: Dermal fillers come in a wide variety and are used to target areas of the face at rest, unlike Botox, which targets areas of expression. Most dermal fillers contain hyaluronic acid gel, which acts as scaffolding in facial areas where key volume has been lost. This gel adds instant volume while encouraging increased collagen production for softer, smoother-looking skin. Dermal fillers are best used in the cheeks, lips, and in the folds around the nose and mouth. Depending on the brand, results typically last for over 12 months.
