What Not to Do After Botox®

Facial expressions share our feelings with the world, but they also contribute to the development of lines and wrinkles. Botox® smooths these expression lines so that you look younger and more refreshed. While side effects from Botox® are rare, you can help prevent them by following a few easy tips.

What is Botox®?

Botox® is an injectable anti-aging treatment that relaxes lines and wrinkles. Botox® works to treat facial lines caused by the movement of facial muscles. It stops these muscles from contracting, releasing the skin, so lines and wrinkles soften and begin to disappear. This safe and effective treatment helps millions of people achieve a more youthful appearance without surgery.

How Does Botox® (Botulinum Toxin) Work?

Botox® works using botulinum toxin, a compound purified from bacteria. When injected, this neurotoxin targets the facial nerves that signal your muscles to contract. It stops the nerve from releasing neurotransmitters that trigger muscle movement. Without constant tension from the underlying muscles, your skin can relax, allowing lines and wrinkles to fade away. The effect on your nerves wears off over time and causes no permanent changes.

What Not to Do After Botox®

Botox® side effects are rare, and decades of use in medicine and aesthetics have demonstrated its safety and effectiveness. If Botox® moves from its injection site, you can experience muscle relaxation in unwanted areas. You can minimize this risk by following these suggestions:

  • Avoid strenuous exercise for 12 to 24 hours after treatment
  • Do not lay down or keep your face bent downward for at least four hours
  • Do not rub or massage your face for four hours
  • Do not apply makeup for at least half an hour

Following these tips will help keep your Botox® in place so that it works as intended. If you have concerns, talk to your dermatologist to learn more. Most Botox® side effects are mild and will disappear on their own.

What Can Botox® Treat?

The FDA has approved Botox® for several aesthetic uses. These include:

  • Forehead lines
  • Lines between the brows (glabellar lines)
  • Crow’s feet around the eyes

Botox® is also approved for numerous medical uses, including eye muscle issues, muscle spasms, and excessive sweating. Because Botox® acts on facial muscles and nerves, it works best on lines and wrinkles caused by muscle movement.

What Results Will I See With Botox®?

Botox® injections can take as little as ten to fifteen minutes, and you can return to work or other activities immediately afterward. Your results will become visible within a week or two. You may see continued improvements for up to two weeks after your injections. Botox® results typically last three to four months.
