If you want to stop hiding your legs and feel confident enough to wear what you want, Levy Dermatology can help. Spider veins can make you feel more self-conscious about your legs, but sclerotherapy can make those veins disappear. You can see clear skin on your legs with minimal discomfort or downtime.

What are Spider Veins?

Spider veins most often occur on the legs and face. On the legs, they look like reddish, bluish, or purple webs or branches under the skin. Spider veins are less than 1mm in diameter. They may appear in clusters. You may also see larger, twisted-looking veins called varicose veins. Small varicose veins (1 to 3mm) can be managed with the same treatment as spider veins.

How to Get Rid of Spider Veins

Sclerotherapy is the preferred treatment for eliminating spider veins. At Levy Dermatology, we use Asclera®, a sclerosing solution. When injected into a vein, this solution irritates and damages the vein walls.

The treated veins will form scar tissue and collapse, stopping blood flow and redirecting it to other veins. These veins will shrink until they are absorbed by the body. You may experience relief from the itching, burning, and discomfort that can accompany spider veins or small varicose veins.

Will My Spider Veins Come Back?

Asclera® sclerotherapy causes permanent vein closure, and the body removes the remnants of the vein so it cannot come back. However, you can develop new spider veins. You can take some steps to help prevent this, including:

  • Engage in more physical activity
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Avoid spending too much time in the same position
  • Wear compression stockings if recommended by your doctor

Heredity and hormonal factors play a significant role in whether you get spider veins and how many new ones you may develop. These two primary causes of spider veins are difficult to avoid.

How Many Sclerotherapy Treatments Will I Need?

Most spider veins respond to sclerotherapy with one treatment. Large clusters of spider veins often require several injections. Your spider veins will start to fade as they collapse after treatment. Any veins that do not collapse after treatment can be injected a second time. Asclera® is highly effective, and most people are very satisfied with the appearance of their legs after treatment.

Is There Any Downtime With Sclerotherapy for Spider Veins?

You will wear a compression stocking continuously for two to three days. You will then wear the stocking during the day for two to three weeks. You may feel some burning, irritation, or soreness over the treatment area. You can return to light activities after treatment. Your doctor will advise you when you can resume more strenuous activities.
