What is Acne?
When dirt, oil, and bacteria become trapped inside your pores, acne can result. The most common signs of acne are blackheads and whiteheads. While whiteheads remain enclosed under the skin, blackheads are open to the air and have become oxidized. People can also develop pustules and cysts, which can grow large, painful, and leave scars.
What Treatments are Available to Get Rid of Acne?
At Levy Dermatology, we often recommend one or more of these treatment methods:
We can recommend excellent dermatologist-selected topical treatments that people can use at home to get better control of their acne and keep their skin healthier.
For some people, prescription medications may help with acne. These can include antibiotics to target the bacteria that cause inflamed acne and may also include prescription retinoids. These can have dramatic results on severe acne but can also have serious side effects.
Laser Skin Resurfacing
We use the Halo™ by Sciton laser resurfacing system, which allows us to customize the intensity and type of treatment you receive. Most patients report that the pulses of the laser feel like being snapped by a rubber band. Treatments take about 30 minutes for a light treatment or up to an hour for a very intensive one.
We offer two types of microneedling, both effective against acne and acne scars. The SkinPen® is a small handheld device that provides precise, targeted microneedling, making it suitable for treating specific affected areas of the face.
Vivace™ RF Microneedling uses microneedling but also applies radiofrequency (RF) energy, stimulating more collagen production and helping to refresh and rejuvenate the skin’s surface.
Some people have both active acne and older acne scars. In some cases, we may recommend a dermal filler like Juvederm® to lift and reduce the appearance of these scars, making the skin look smoother.
