Cancer of any kind can be scary but there are a variety of treatment options available for cancers of the skin. If you have been diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma or squamous cell carcinoma, Mohs Micrographic Surgery (MMS) may be your best option.

MMS is a skin cancer surgery that removes unhealthy skin and spares as much normal tissue as possible. During your treatment, your dermatologic surgeon will remove one layer of your tumor at a time. After each layer is removed, it will be examined under a microscope to determine it another layer needs to be removed. This process is repeated until the skin cancer is completely gone.

Good candidates for Mohs Micrographic Surgery include patients with skin cancers of the head and neck, large tumors, cancers that have come back after previous treatment, instances where recurrence is likely, or more aggressive forms of skin cancer. MMS has a 99% efficacy rate with minimal chance of regrowth.

The recovery time and process vary on a case-by-case basis. However, typically recovery is very easy and uneventful. Your surgeon will have you rest as much as possible several days following your treatment. Excessive lifting and physical activity should be avoided 7-21 days prior to surgery depending on the area of treatment.

Mild-to-moderate pain can be expected as the local anesthesia wears off several hours post-surgery. Pain can be easily controlled with over-the-counter pain medications. Stitches are removed anywhere from 7-14 days. Drs. Levy and Huber will advise you on when you can come in to have them taken out as well as proper wound-care techniques.

Excessive exposure to the sun has been shown to cause skin cancer. Sunscreen and protective clothing should be worn to prevent further skin damage or recurrence of previous tumors.
