Unwanted hair can make people feel self-conscious, and many people find themselves in a cycle of spending time and money on hair removal. Laser hair removal can put an end to your shaving or waxing days, leaving you with smooth, hair-free skin

How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

At Levy Dermatology, we use the BBL™ Sciton laser. BBL stands for broadband light. The laser energy targets the hair follicles in the skin by heating up the pigment in the hair root. This heat damages the follicle and prevents it from growing hair.

What is Getting Laser Hair Removal Like?

Many people compare the feeling of the BBL™ Sciton laser as resembling a rubber band being snapped on the skin. We will apply topical numbing agents if needed to make the process comfortable for you. You may feel some warmth with each pulse of the laser.

How Long Does Laser Hair Removal Take?

Session times for laser hair removal vary depending on the size of the treatment area. While a small area of the face might only require ten to fifteen minutes, a larger area of the body might take 30-45 minutes

At any time, not all hair follicles are active. Some have entered a resting state with no hair growth, and these do not respond to the laser. Laser hair removal requires multiple treatments in order to treat all of the hairs as they come back into their active phases. Most people need six sessions spaced six weeks apart

Preparing for Laser Hair Removal

You can take some helpful steps to make the most of your laser hair removal sessions to see the best results. You should avoid any waxing, epilating, or plucking of the hair. This removes the hair root, leaving the laser with nothing to target. You should also avoid bleaching the hair, which has the same effect since it removes all the pigment.

While you will have to give up waxing and similar methods, you may still shave. We will instruct you to shave 24-48 hours before your treatment session. This leaves the root intact but removes any extra hair that could also heat up.

Laser Hair Removal Results

After laser hair removal, most people do not see regrowth of hair for months to years. When hair does regrow, it looks finer, softer, and lighter in color. Many people schedule yearly maintenance treatments to manage the few hairs that have returned and keep the skin smooth and sleek.

Is There Any Downtime With Laser Hair Removal?

You will see some redness after laser hair removal. This clears up within a week. You can resume regular activities after your session with no restrictions.
