Our facial expressions help make us who we are, but they can also cause lines and wrinkles. Small facial muscles pull the overlying skin into creases and folds. Expressions like squinting, smiling, and frowning create these lines, but Botox® can smooth them and even reduce their future appearance.

How Does Botox® Work?

Botox® uses a material called botulinum toxin. This works by binding to nerve cells wherever your Levy Dermatology provider injects it. It stops the nerves from sending signals to the muscles that create those deep lines and wrinkles. Without signals from the nerves, the muscles will relax, and the skin will become smoother, erasing the appearance of lines and wrinkles.

The effects of Botox® last about 3-4 months, so the impact on the nerve and muscle is temporary and causes no lasting effects. Despite the “toxin” in the name, Botox® does not injure either the nerve or muscle in any way.

How is Botox® Administered?

Your Levy Dermatology provider will administer Botox® through a series of injections into the area or areas designated for treatment. Botox® usually comes in measurements of units, and the manufacturer estimates that treating the forehead will use about twenty units

What Results Will I See With Botox®?

People with moderate to severe lines and wrinkles around the eyes, between the brows, and across the forehead will benefit from Botox®. Initial results may appear within a day or two, but they can take up to two weeks to develop fully.

You will see lines and wrinkles disappear or their appearance dramatically diminished. The forehead, area between the brows, and crow’s feet will become smoother, and the skin will look softer and more refreshed.

Some people who look younger than the average Botox® user have chosen to use Botox® to hinder the development of these lines and wrinkles by stopping the muscle contractions before the muscles can create too much creasing of the skin. This can delay the progression of lines and wrinkles. However, when Botox® wears off, your lines and wrinkles will return to their pre-treatment state, so Botox® does not work as a permanent wrinkle cure.

Is There Any Downtime With Botox®?

You might see some minor bruising and swelling in the injection area lasting no longer than a few days. You can resume all of your usual activities immediately. You should not rub your face for several hours after treatment to prevent accidentally moving the Botox® from its correct place.

Am I a Good Candidate for Botox®?

Most people can receive Botox®. However, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have certain muscular or neurological conditions, you may not be a good candidate. Discuss your health history during your consultation.
