Dermal fillers can enhance or restore your facial features by adding natural-looking volume. Dermal fillers replace lost volume in areas like the cheeks, smooth out lines and wrinkles, and improve the appearance of areas like the lips.

What are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers add volume to create fuller, younger-looking facial features. Our skin loses some of its natural support structure as we age, particularly collagen. This causes skin laxity, and at the same time, the cheeks and other parts of the face lose fat and may begin to look hollow. Your Levy Dermatology injection specialist will use several targeted formulations to achieve the best results

Where are Dermal Fillers Used?

Common locations for dermal fillers include:

  • Nasolabial folds (lines that run from mouth to nose)
  • Cheeks
  • Lines and wrinkles around the mouth
  • Lip enhancement
  • Acne scars
  • Crow’s feet
  • Frown lines
  • Hands

Dermal fillers reduce the appearance of lines, wrinkles, and acne scars by lifting the skin from beneath, producing a smoother, more even appearance. On the hands, they can reduce the appearance of sunken skin and even diminish the appearance of spider veins.

How Deep are Dermal Fillers Injected?

Your injection specialist injects dermal fillers into the dermis. While the outer layer of cells, the epidermis, sheds and renews rapidly, fillers injected into the dermis last longer and provide smooth, natural-looking results. The depth of the dermis depends on the area of the face, with some places having thicker skin than others.

What Kinds of Dermal Fillers are Available?

Levy Dermatology offers several filler options, so we can always provide you with the best choice for your aesthetic goals.

Juvederm®

The Juvederm® family of fillers includes formulations for the lips and mouth area, cheeks, nasolabial creases, and other areas of the face. They use hyaluronic acid, a molecule naturally found in the skin, to enhance volume.

Restylane®

Another family of hyaluronic acid fillers, Restylane® products, add volume to the cheeks, lips, and other areas. They also smooth out lines and wrinkles, resulting in a more youthful appearance.

Radiesse®

Radiesse® uses calcium hydroxylapatite, a mineral found in bones and teeth. As a filler, it comes suspended in a water-based gel to make it soft, flexible, and resilient, especially suited to lines and wrinkles of the lower face. It also stimulates collagen production for longer-lasting volume and enhancement.

Belotero®

The hyaluronic acid filler Belotero® BALANCE targets nasolabial folds, but it works well for most deep lines and wrinkles. The gel formula holds up to even deeply etched lines and wrinkles for smooth, natural-looking results.

How Long Do Dermal Fillers Last?

Hyaluronic acid dermal fillers last anywhere from six to eighteen months. Very active areas such as the lips and around the mouth will have shorter-lasting filler results than more stationary areas like the cheeks. Radiesse® lasts longer because it stimulates collagen production, and this collagen can remain and continue to provide volume and firmness after the filler has been removed from the body.
