At What Age Should You Get Botox®?

How old were you the first time you started to worry about those forehead wrinkles or frown lines? Botox® treats visible lines and wrinkles but can also prevent them from forming. By relaxing facial muscles, Botox® stops the repetitive motions that cause your skin to crease.

What is Botox®?

Botox® is an injectable treatment that helps you look younger by smoothing lines and wrinkles. Expression lines develop when your facial muscles pull and crease the skin as you frown, squint, or smile. Botox® relaxes these muscles, halting their effects on your skin. This highly precise treatment leaves other facial muscles unaffected, so you look natural and refreshed.

How Does Botox® (Botulinum Toxin) Work?

Botox® and its relatives use a compound called botulinum toxin. This neurotoxin targets the facial nerves that signal muscles to contract. It binds to the nerves and stops the release of signaling molecules, stopping muscle contractions. Botox® is injected in such tiny amounts that it only affects the targeted nerves. As a result, your facial expressions still look natural but younger and more relaxed.

At What Age Should You Get Botox®?

While you may think of Botox® as something used to make existing lines disappear, it also works as a powerful preventative treatment. The right age to begin getting Botox® depends on many factors, including an evaluation of potential problem areas.

Some people start Botox® in their 40s or older, at the stage when lines and wrinkles have become noticeable and bothersome. Botox® works effectively for these people, but when the treatment wears off, the lines reappear. More and more people have chosen preventative Botox®.
The average preventative Botox® patient is about 25-35 years old. If you notice smile or frown lines that do not go away even when your face stops moving, you can use Botox® to stop them in their tracks.

How Long Does Botox® Last?

Some people see Botox® results after a few days, and you will see the full effects after about a week. Botox® lasts three to four months for most people. Some may find that it lasts a bit longer, especially if they have had Botox® regularly for some time. Your Levy Dermatology provider will determine the best treatment schedule for you.

Am I a Good Candidate for Botox®?

Botox® is one of the safest aesthetic treatments available, with over two decades of use and millions of doses administered. It is safe for almost all healthy adults who want to treat or prevent lines and wrinkles. You should not have Botox® if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have certain neuromuscular conditions.
